The height of this species is 8 to 28 inches (20-70 cm), the petals are typically 35 to 50 mm long and the number of flowers per stem one or two, rarely three. This species is winter dormant and is very long lived and slow to flower from seed. Its British habitat is alkaline woods in areas with abundant supplies of water in the growing season. The species is extremely rare in Britain although more common in Europe.
